Homemade Raw Milk Formula
Two Days Worth of Homemade Raw Milk Formula
I have had several mamas ask about what I do, so here are all the details.
This takes about 10-20 minutes once you get the hang of it. You can make 1-2 days worth at a time. I’ve included a picture of the products I buy for those who want to know which brands I chose. I typically use the chosen brand avocado oil but have used the one pictured because my mama got it for us from Sam’s.
The original recipe calls for sunflower oil. I did some digging and Sally recommended this because she said most mothers consume seed oils, so thus their breastmilk contained seed oils. Keeping that information in mind, I decided to use only avocado oil & coconut oil. Not because they are the “best” oils especially but because I personally try to avoid seed oils in my diet, so if I was able to make breastmilk for Kai, it would be high in these oils I chose.
You need the liquid whey for homemade formula and there is no substitute for this. Remember the liquid whey I told you not to throw out from the homemade yogurt? Here is one use.
Hint: Don’t need to make homemade formula? You can also use it in place of water for your sourdough
Kai loves this formula and thrives on it. I hope it can help others who need a GOOD substitute to breastmilk. I believe breastmilk is the best option but this doesn’t feel like a far stretch and for that I am grateful, as a micro supply mama.
Recipe for one days worth, adjust as needed
230 grams boiled filtered water
200 grams of cold filtered water
2 tsp gelatin
4 tablespoons lactose
2 tsp coconut oil
2 tsp avocado oil
485 grams a2a2 raw milk (East Lohman Acres is who we use)
2 tablespoons raw cream
55 grams liquid whey (do NOT used powdered)
1 serving probiotic
1/4 tsp whole food vitamin c
1/2 tsp CLO
Warm the water & add the lactose and gelatin. Dissolve completely. I do this by slowly sprinkling the gelatin and whisking as I go. You want the water near boil but not bubbling as it clumps.
Add the cold water after it’s fully dissolved then coconut oil.
Add to blender.
Put the remainder of the ingredients into the blender & combine for 4-5 seconds.
Place in the fridge, shake to pour in a bottle (glass is my preference) and warm before giving to baby. ALWAYS keep raw milk under 140 degrees or it will denature it and change the shape of the protein. I use a baby warmer or run the bottle under warm water in the sink.
I hope this helps another mama who needs another option! This recipe was adapted from this original WAP recipe.
